Through all his interviews with inthemix, Dutch superstar Armin van Buuren has left no doubt where his heart lies. “Trance is the sound I feel closest to,” he told us in emphatically in 2010. “I’m not afraid to call myself trance.”
A few weeks from now, the DJ will return to Australia to lead Stereosonic alongside stadium-house sensations like Avicii, Kaskade and Afrojack, but don’t expect him to stray from what he’s always done best.
“I have a huge respect for all the new house guys and admire and enjoy their work but it’s just not me,” Armin told US publication Spinner this week. “I try to look at it, and understand what works and what doesn’t for me. I see it as a big compliment that after such a massive set by Afrojack [at New York’s Electric Zoo Festival], people really enjoyed my set too. It means I’ve showed people who I am as an artist.”
However, one prediction from the A State Of Trance leader might strike fear into the hearts of some followers. “Soon there will be big trance records with dubstep breaks,” he prophesised. “Just to name an example, part of the reason why the Beatles got bigger was because they experimented with sounds from other genres – the Moog synthesiser on Sgt. Pepper.”
The interview also sees Armin name-checking Orjan Nilsen, Protoculture, DNS Project,Ashley Wallbridge and Arty as “huge” inspirations, so it’s not like he’s now championing Borgore. The Stereosonic headliner also echoed a similar line to his fellow Dutchman Tiesto about not doing a Guetta.
“I just follow my heart and do what works best for me and my sets,” he said. “I don’t try to seek pop hits or try to stay away from them.”
